A Federal Government funding initiative has enabled the development of a long desired Training Facility for the Mater Hospital at Pimlico. Principally to be utilized for the training of hospital staff, it is also intended to encourage ongoing relationships with tertiary education establishments including James Cook University.
The Training Precinct incorporates the construction of a new building to the corner of Fulham Road and Diprose Street along with alterations and additions to the existing adjacent Conference Centre building. The space between these two buildings has been crafted to provide a collective forecourt and entrances to both of the buildings. The upper level of the new building accessed via an atrium space houses a variety of new training rooms and offices that are linked through transparent glass partitions.
A future enclosure of the lower level will enable the construction of a series of medical suites accessed via a covered spine and connected to the existing adjacent medical centre building. The scheme thereby re-anchors two relatively disparate structures with new intensity.
Materials and detailing have been incorporated to anchor the buildings as a part of the Hospitals greater complex, and also to connect the three immediately adjacent buildings so that they read as a collective.
