This Townsville residence is located within a new subdivision located on the sloping foothills of Castle Hill with stunning ocean and island views.
The planning strategically utilizes the outlook, with the lounge and master bedroom thrust toward the north west to capture the most desirable view orientation to the north. The remainder of the house sits back on the land so that the horizon view is cropped, eliminating views down to the street below. Consideration of views is resonant to the finest level of detail.
A strategy of total site utilisation has been adopted. The building is pushed to the extremities of the block and with its ‘L’ shaped plan and retaining swimming pool, enables the opportunity for a special and rare piece of flat ground. This Terrace is envisaged as the focal space of daily events and as such is established as a roofed outdoor room. ‘Shaded’ and ‘Outdoor’ are qualities essential to life in the tropics.
A journey to the house from the street is detailed to enhance the idea of an oasis, in which one departs the public life of the street and arrives at a private destination. The entry stair is tightened to create this threshold. A rendered concrete masonry base with lightweight upper walls heightens this awareness. Levels are also worked within the house to create area delineation and to alter degrees of privacy.
