This complex for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community incorporating a church, training school, childcare and apartments is based in suburban Townsville. The site possesses magnificent views of Mount Stuart directly toward the main cliff face and a long expansive view along its range. This project is designed to recognise these views.
The church has been positioned centrally within the complex to provide an entrance position and a community focus.
The entrance sequence to the Church via the Upper Terrace reveals and frames the view through the use of building placement and raised level to effectively crop the sideways and downward outlooks. The placement of the football field maintains a clear area upon which no buildings are to be built that may otherwise have impeded the view from the terraces. Development beyond the site boundaries will not affect the outlook as the view angles above horizon are sufficient. The remainder of the development has been strategically placed outside the view angles.
